The Western Ireland Gaelic Football Club was created in 2001 by Isaac Bromley. The original men’s team was based around players from the Henley Football Club, but it has now grown to include players from clubs all over Adelaide.
For a team with no Irish players or previous Gaelic Football experience, the Western Ireland men’s team has performed at a consistently high level since entering the competition. They have made the finals in all but one season, winning three Hannigan Cups and two 7-a-side carnivals. In 2007 they also started playing in the 9/7-a-side competition and have made the grand final in both years.
At the beginning of the 07/08 season, the Western Ireland Women’s team, the “Crusaders”, joined the competition. Based around the former UniSA women’s team, the Crusaders then completed their most successful season ever.
The club is sponsored by the Avoca Hotel, at Clarence Gardens. Their support has been greatly appreciated and the players have enjoyed going back to the pub after games and for team functions.
